within 72 hours of the accident. We need to know the date and time of the accident, what damage is done to the vehicle, whether or not the vehicle is off the road and an estimated time for repair. It will be a standard procedure that if you are involved in an accident an enforcement officer will contact you to discuss the accident and where appropiate will ask you to bring in your vehicle for an inspection. If the vehicle is not road worthy and needs work to be carried out by a garage then the vehicle will be suspended until it is presented to an enforcement officer, who will determine if the vehicle can be used for hire and reward. |

Number of seats A hackney carriage and/or private hire vehicle is a motor vehicle constructed or adapted to seat fewer than nine passengers. Spaces in vehicles, which have been constructed or adapted to carry wheelchairs, shall be counted in the total seating capacity. Proprietors should be aware that converting a vehicle could affect its taxation class and must ensure that this is amended. |

Leaving your vehicle unattended on a Rank It has come to our attention that some drivers are leaving their vehicles unattended for a period of time. Please remember that this is extremely frustrating for other drivers and it could also be seen as obstructing other drivers from their business. Enforcement Officers will be monitoring the situation and may consider taking enforcement action against those that abuse the legislation. Note: Town Police Clauses Act 1847 - Section 62 (Fine of £200,-) Town Police Clauses Act 1847 - Section 64 (Fine of £200,-) |

Moving up the Rank Advice has been given on more than one occasion to hackney carriage drivers regarding moving up the rank but some still appear to be disregarding this and it is causing some disquiet amongst the Trade. Byelaw 7 (d) states: "The driver of a hackney carriage shall, when plying for hire in any street and not actually hired from time to time when any other carriage immediately in front is driven off or moved forward cause his carriage to be moved forward so as to fill the place previously occupied by the carriage driven off or moved forward". I would like to advise you therefore that this breach of byelaw will no longer be tolerated and enforcement action will be taken against any offenders. Rank inspections will be made to monitor this situation. Lynsey Keen, Senior Licensing Enforcement Officer. |
